barren northern terrain from the Bohai Sea to the Gobi Desert. Head north
to a village where the Great Wall is well preserved and walk along the
wall to enjoy sweeping vistas of this mammoth fortress. Then visit a CLOISONNE
WORKSHOP where you will see local artisans use the techniques of this ancient
art form to turn pieces of copper into colorful decorative items. After
lunch in a local restaurant, you’ll visit the MING TOMBS, burial site for
13 of the 16 Ming emperors. Tonight experience local culture at the PEKING
OPERA, including a behindthe-scenes look at the colorful makeup being applied
to the performers. (B,L,D)
Day 5 Beijing-Xi’an.
(Thu.) This morning enjoy a rickshaw ride through one of Beijing’s HUTONGS,
the city’s ancient alleys. During this visit, you’re welcomed into the
courtyard of a family’s home, a daycare center, and a retirement community

you to the city of Xi’an in central China where you spend the next two
nights. This evening enjoy “The Tang Dynasty” DINNER SHOW, featuring a
colorful assemblage of classical performances. (B,D)
Day 6 Xi’an.

dominated the silk trade, Xi’an today is an archaeological treasure-trove.
Sightseeing begins with a visit to the nearby DAYAN PAGODA, built in 652
A.D. During lunch, enjoy a NOODLE MAKING DEMONSTRATION by a master chef
and learn how Chinese noodles are made by hand. In 1974 the enormous TOMB
of China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huangdi, was accidentally discovered
by local farmers. Marvel at the legion of terra-cotta warriors that has
been guarding the burial site for 2,000 years. (B,L,D)
Day 7 Xi’an-Lhasa,
Tibet. (Sat.) This morning visit the Xi’an
City South Gate; you may even see some locals practicing their morning
Tai Chi. Early this afternoon fly to the holy city of Lhasa, the capital
of the mystical Buddhist kingdom of Tibet, locked away in the mountains
of the Himalayas. The balance of the day is free for you to rest and adjust
to the 14,000-foot altitude. (B,L,D)
Day 8 Lhasa.
(Sun.) This morning after a city tour, visit the imposing POTALA PALACE,

is high on a hill overlooking the Jialing and Yangtze Rivers. Board the
Victoria Anna for a three-night CRUISE through the Three Gorges of the
Yangtze. (B,D)
Day 11 Wanxian
or Shibaozhai or Fengdu. (Wed.) Depending
on river conditions, one of the following shore excursions will be offered:
Wanxian, “Gateway to Eastern Szechuan Province”, where you will see an
acrobatic show, market, and possibly a school; Shibaozhai with its 400-year-old,
twelve-story red wooden pagoda perched high on a cliff side; or Fengdu,
where you’ll visit the Snow Jade Caves. (B,L,D)
Day 12 Shennong
Stream or Daning River. (Thu.) Head downstream
through the first and second of the three gorges—Qutang Gorge, the shortest
but most dramatic gorge, and Wu, known for its quiet beauty and forest-covered
mountains. You can almost touch the perpendicular walls rising from the
riverbanks as your captain negotiates this narrow gap. After lunch disembark
for a BOAT EXCURSION down either the Daning River or Shennong Stream, depending

for your flight to Shanghai, China’s most populous city and center of trade
and industry. Tonight there will be plenty of time to enjoy the city and
shop some of the 400 stores on Nanjing Road and the famous Friendship Store
on the Bund. (B,L)
Day 14 Shanghai.
(Sat.) Full day of sightseeing. Stroll along the Bund, the city’s riverfront
boulevard lined with historic buildings, housing, banks, and trade houses.
You’ll visit the SHANGHAI MUSEUM and experience the YU YUAN GARDENS. Enjoy
lunch in a local restaurant and visit the CHILDREN’S PALACE, one of China’s
famous kindergartens. This evening, your Tour Director hosts a special
FAREWELL DINNER followed by a spectacular ACROBATIC SHOW. (B,L,D)

About Globus More than
75 years ago, Antonio Mantegazza bought a rowboat to transport commercial
goods across Lake Lugano in Switzerland. Who could know that rowboat would
launch the world's leading escorted travel company? Today Globus is a global,
family-owned company reaching every corner of the world. Globus is now
the first choice among individuals looking for vacations with both domestic
and international travel in a variety of styles to six continents and hundreds
of itineraries to choose from.
Antonio's frequent
trips across the scenic lake led him to consider opportunities in a different
market - tourism. His entrepreneurial instinct pushed him to gradually
acquire some motorcoaches to transport tourists around the Lake Lugano
area. In 1928, Antonio opened a company specializing in motorcoach touring
called Globus Viaggi. The company began with a fleet of 12 coaches which
operated local excursions for European tourists in Switzerland.
By 1950, Globus
Viaggi had grown to a fleet of 33 coaches and featured overnight excursions
to Rome, Venice, the Dolomites and the French Riviera. Gradually, these
became regularly scheduled tours and grew longer to cover more ground.
Later that decade, under the leadership of Werner Albek, Antonio's business
partner, Globus pioneered the concept of Grand European Touring by offering
first-class European tours to North Americans. By 1961, the company launched
its Cosmos arm, which featured affordable, value-priced European touring
for the cost-conscious British traveler.
The coach tours
were so successful that Cosmos soon introduced another form of travel for
the British market: air holiday packages to the sunny destinations of southern
Europe. By 1968, Cosmos air holidays became so popular the company formed
its own airline, Monarch Airlines. Monarch Airlines started out modestly
with two used Britannia aircraft and eventually blossomed into one of the
most successful European charter companies with a large fleet of modern
jets and its own engineering division.
Under the flagship
of Sergio Mantegazza, current president and son of Antonio, Globus began
expanding its markets beyond Great Britain and North America. Since 1974,
travel packages have been sold in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and most
recently in Southeast Asia. Starting in the 70s, the company also aggressively
expanded its offerings, introducing travelers to more countries than any
other tour operator with packages to Africa, South and North America, Europe,
the South Pacific and Asia.
Today, the
Globus family of brands is marketed and operated by a network of more than
32 independent tourism and aviation businesses, serviced by a group of
more than 5,000 professionals worldwide. Combined, Globus, Cosmos, and
Monograms carry over 500,000 passengers a year, making the organization
the leading operator of guided vacations worldwide. Globus attributes its
success to the ideals of founder Antonio Mantegazza. For three generations,
his vision, hard work, love for travel, and commitment have guided the
company. These values are the cornerstone on which Globus was built and
will continue to grow.
