UMBRIA'S TREASURES
9 Day Tour
On
this delightful vacation to Italy, you’ll have the opportunity to
explore the Umbria region, which is characterized by its beautiful
cities, warm hills, and extensive history. Your home base will be
Assisi, so you can explore the region and its many towns without the
hassles of packing and unpacking. Assisi is a small medieval town and
the birthplace of St. Francis, who founded the Franciscan order. It is
an important pilgrimage sight, and on this tour, you’ll see the
Basilica of St. Francis, where St. Francis is buried, as well as the
site where St. Francis came to meditate and pray.
From Assisi, take excursions to Gubbio, the town where St. Francis
tamed the wolf; Perugia, the capital of Umbria and an important
university town; and Todi, a prosperous town in the Middle Ages with
one of the most picturesque piazzas in Italy. History buffs will find
it interesting that Todi is surrounded by three sets of concentric
walls corresponding to different times in the town’s history—the
medieval, Roman, and Etruscan.
In addition to history, this area of Italy also offers delicious food.
The Umbrian cuisine reflects the rural nature of the area—with simple,
yet flavorful ingredients, fresh fruits and vegetables, and high
quality olive oil. Perugia has become famous for its chocolate, so be
sure to sample some.
All of this and much more—including time in Rome—are waiting for you on
this wonderful vacation through Italy’s Umbria region.

Italy, graced by the Fontana Maggiore. Admire the gothic cathedral, the
Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria, and Perugia’s stunning medieval
municipal palace. Time to explore on your own—don’t forget to shop for
chocolates and other specialties, for which the town is famous, on
Corso Vannucci. Next, visit hilltop Todi, originally an Etruscan
frontier settlement and a prosperous town during the Middle Ages. It
still has its three sets of walls: Etruscan, Roman, and medieval. On
Piazza del Popolo, marvel at the 13th-century palaces, and from the
terrace of PIAZZA GARIBALDI, enjoy a panoramic view of the valley and
hills of Umbria before returning to Assisi. (Breakfast)

Local Guide, take pictures of La Rocca, the former Papal fortress that
was used as a high-security prison until 1982; admire the Ponte delle

About
Globus
More than 75 years
ago, Antonio Mantegazza bought a rowboat to transport commercial goods
across Lake Lugano in Switzerland. Who could know that rowboat would
launch
the world's leading escorted travel company? Today Globus is a global,
family-owned company reaching every corner of the world. Globus is now
the first choice among individuals looking for vacations with both
domestic
and international travel in a variety of styles to six continents and
hundreds
of itineraries to choose from.
Antonio's frequent
trips across the scenic lake led him to consider opportunities in a
different
market - tourism. His entrepreneurial instinct pushed him to gradually
acquire some motorcoaches to transport tourists around the Lake Lugano
area. In 1928, Antonio opened a company specializing in motorcoach
touring
called Globus Viaggi. The company began with a fleet of 12 coaches
which
operated local excursions for European tourists in Switzerland.
By 1950, Globus
Viaggi had grown to a fleet of 33 coaches and featured overnight
excursions
to Rome, Venice, the Dolomites and the French Riviera. Gradually, these
became regularly scheduled tours and grew longer to cover more ground.
Later that decade, under the leadership of Werner Albek, Antonio's
business
partner, Globus pioneered the concept of Grand European Touring by
offering
first-class European tours to North Americans. By 1961, the company
launched
its Cosmos arm, which featured affordable, value-priced European
touring
for the cost-conscious British traveler.
The coach tours
were so successful that Cosmos soon introduced another form of travel
for
the British market: air holiday packages to the sunny destinations of
southern
Europe. By 1968, Cosmos air holidays became so popular the company
formed
its own airline, Monarch Airlines. Monarch Airlines started out
modestly
with two used Britannia aircraft and eventually blossomed into one of
the
most successful European charter companies with a large fleet of modern
jets and its own engineering division.
Under the flagship
of Sergio Mantegazza, current president and son of Antonio, Globus
began
expanding its markets beyond Great Britain and North America. Since
1974,
travel packages have been sold in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and
most
recently in Southeast Asia. Starting in the 70s, the company also
aggressively
expanded its offerings, introducing travelers to more countries than
any
other tour operator with packages to Africa, South and North America,
Europe,
the South Pacific and Asia.
Today, the
Globus family of brands is marketed and operated by a network of more
than
32 independent tourism and aviation businesses, serviced by a group of
more than 5,000 professionals worldwide. Combined, Globus, Cosmos, and
Monograms carry over 500,000 passengers a year, making the organization
the leading operator of guided vacations worldwide. Globus attributes
its
success to the ideals of founder Antonio Mantegazza. For three
generations,
his vision, hard work, love for travel, and commitment have guided the
company. These values are the cornerstone on which Globus was built and
will continue to grow.

Sicilian
Cuisine: The Taste of
the Sun
Italy
Travel
InformationIn Sicily,
the sun illuminates the land as the sea provides plenty of moisture.
The
result is an array of fresh home-grown produce. That, combined with the
influence of the island's first settlers, creates a culinary tradition
that is a delight to all the senses.
In
Palermo,
unique combinations of
flavors like citrus, mint, saffron, chilies, raisin, chocolate, wine
and
honey exhibit the city's early Arab influence. On the east coast, where
the Greeks settled first, fish, olives, beans and vegetables are the
preferred
staples. Classic Sicilian dishes include caponata (sweet and sour
eggplant
relish), panelle (chickpea fritters), sfincioni (pizza with onions and
anchovies) and pasta alla Norma (pasta with fried eggplant, tomato
sauce
and ricotta cheese).
In
addition
to the island's signature
entrees, Sicily serves up some of the world's most decadent desserts.
Perhaps
the most famous delicacy is the cannoli alla cassata, a more cake-like
take on the standard cannoli. But it doesn't end there. Dozens of other
sweet dreams include filled pastries, fried pastries, cookies, cakes,
candied
fruit, sorbet, and granita.
Legend
even
has it that the world's
most adored after-dinner indulgence, ice cream, was invented in Sicily
during Roman times, when a relay of runners would bring snow down from
Mt. Etna to be flavored and served to wealthy patricians.

San
Gimignano, Italy: The City
of Towers
The
medieval
town of San Gimignano,
tucked away in the Tuscan hills, is a short, scenic drive from Florence
or Pisa, and well worth the trip. Known across Italy as the "City of
Beautiful
Towers," the stony village has a fable of towering egos to tell.
San
Gimignano
hit its heyday in the
late Middle Ages as its strategic location along the route to Rome made
it central Italy's most important trading center. As the town grew,
space
within the city's protective walls became scarce. So the town council
declared
that buildings could be no more than 17 yards wide by 24 yards deep.
Not to
be
undone by the new regulations,
the wealthy families of San Gimignano began setting their sights on the
sky. One after the other, the town's most affluent residents built
white
stone towers, each taller than the one before, in a desperate attempt
to
symbolize the owners' pride and power. Eventually, 72 dueling towers
stood
within the city's walls.
The
thirteenth century was a tumultuous
one for the Tuscan town, as it changed hands repeatedly. And although
it
fought hardily throughout those decades and secured its independence,
San
Gimingnano was ultimately overcome by the Black Plague in 1348. In
fact,
the epidemic wiped out all but a quarter of its inhabitants. After
accepting
an offer to be taken under the wing of Florence, the city soon fell
into
decline. In the centuries that followed, towers collapsed unmourned
until
only 14 remained.
As the
Renaissance produced a more
enlightened Florentine culture, the fledgling town found some patrons
who
worked to preserve the remaining towers as well as some priceless works
of art within the city walls. Their work is apparent today, as a step
through
the gates of San Gimignano immediately transports modern travelers back
to a time when the size of a family's tower determined their place in
society. |
