Sea Cloud
Cruises
"I
always felt this was the most gracious and beautiful sailing ship in the
world"
Dina
Merrill, daughter of Marjorie Merriweather Post
When
'Sea Cloud' was launched in 1931, she was unique. Built by cereal heiress
Marjorie Merriweather Post and her husband, financier E. F. Hutton, 'Sea
Cloud' was the biggest and most beautiful sailing yacht ever commissioned
by a private person, a magnet for royalty, heads of state and movie stars.
Even today, there is still no ship that rivals 'Sea Cloud' for her unique
elegance, comfort and old-fashioned graciousness.
Luckily,
her passengers are no longer limited to a private guest list, and 'Sea
Cloud' is now available to anyone with a sense of adventure and a passion
for excellence in a style of travel nearly vanished from the world today.
Emulating
the lifestyle that the original owners made de rigueur among the who's
who of their day, a cruise aboard this four-masted barque is truly an exercise
in indulgence.
'Sea
Cloud' pampers its guests with an unparalleled level of service once reserved
exclusively for kings or presidents. Attentive stewards look after your
every need, while culinary artists tempt your palate and accomplished lecturers
satisfy your hunger for knowledge. Accommodations are superb, and run the
gamut from an original stateroom once occupied by Post or Hutton themselves,
or one of the luxurious new cabins created during a modern refitting.
For
the lucky few who will sail aboard her this year, 'Sea Cloud' offers an
opportunity to sample all the romance and pleasure of "the sweet life"
under 34,000 yards of billowing sail. 'Sea Cloud' follows the sun, skimming
the warm waters of the Caribbean in February and sailing the Aegean, Ionian,
Mediterranean and Tyrrhenian seas in May, June and September. Wherever
she travels, her guests can expect haute cuisine, elegant accommodations
and a taste of an unrivaled lifestyle.
Someone
once asked Marjorie Post why she'd gone to all the trouble and expense
of building a ship on the scale of 'Sea Cloud.' Her answer? "For a single
purpose only: To spread joy throughout the world." More than sixty years
after her launch, 'Sea Cloud' continues to do just that. We hope you can
sail aboard her this year.

The Birth
of a Seagoing Legend
'Sea Cloud' was born out
of a rare combination of great wealth and extraordinary vision. Her original
owners, heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post and financier E.F. Hutton, set
out to design a ship like no other afloat. They succeeded to a degree unmatched
in their own time - and in ours.
Their goal was to create
a palatial "home on the water," a sea-going manor house that reflected
Marjorie Post's impeccable tastes in interior design, fine art and gracious
hospitality. Used to the finest life had to offer and with money no object,
Post entered wholeheartedly into the shipbuilding process, studying marine
design, choosing materials for fittings and furnishings, and imprinting
the ship with her own inimitable style. Gibbs & Cox and Cox, America's
premier nautical architects, drew the plans, and the ship's keel was laid
in Germany, under the supervision of the Krupp shipyard at Kiel. No expense
was spared to translate Marjorie Post's dreams into 316 feet of elegantly-crafted
maritime reality, the largest private sailing ship ever built.
Carrara marble fireplaces
and baths. Carved oak paneling. Fine oil paintings, etched mirrors and
Louis Philippe chairs. On board 'Sea Cloud' (or 'Hussar,' as she was first
christened in 1931), it was easy to forget that one was sailing on a "windjammer,"
though no one ever forgot the warmth and gracious charm of a cruise on
this remarkable ship. In her day she hosted a wide cross-section of the
world's rich and famous, from the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and Clare
Booth Luce to Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Sweden's King Gustavus V. Among
the notables of the 1930s and early 1940s, an invitation to sail aboard
the ship now known as 'Sea Cloud' was a point of pride and an experience
to cherish…just as it is today.
The
Adventure Continues
In the years preceding World
War II, 'Sea Cloud' was a familiar sight in the great harbors of the world.
Marjorie Post separated from E. F. Hutton and took over the ship, which
became a true "home on the sea" for her and her family. Much of daughter
Dina Merrill's childhood was spent on board, and today Dina's cabin still
shines with bright woods, paneled arches and the cozy fireplace that warmed
her early years. Marjorie Post's third husband Joseph Davies, ambassador
to the Soviet Union, used 'Sea Cloud' as a floating embassy moored in Leningrad
Harbor, and his friend and close confidant Franklin Delano Roosevelt was
a frequent visitor on board.
During the war years, 'Sea
Cloud' was (temporarily) re-christened once again when she saw action as
a weather observation ship "IX-99." Patriotically leased to the U.S. Coast
Guard for the war's duration for the sum of one dollar, she was de-masted
and painted battleship grey for service. Today, five brass chevrons on
the ship's bridge, one for each six months of duty, remind guests and crew
of an exciting interval in the life of the 'Sea Cloud.'
After the war, re-rigged
and renovated, 'Sea Cloud' returned to her role as Marjorie Post's private
yacht, one of many roles she was to play for other, succeeding owners in
the decades that followed. By the late 1970s she was abandoned at Colón,
Panama, dreaming of past glories - and the object of a worldwide search
by a group of shipowners and businessmen determined to keep a maritime
legend alive. A lucky chance led them to 'Sea Cloud'... new cabins, new
sails and new technical equipment were installed... and a beautiful ship
was ready to sail again, with all the romance of a traditional windjammer
and all the comforts of a modern cruise liner.
At
Home, At Sea
More than half a century
after Marjorie Merriweather Post deliberated over marble samples and chose
just the right shade of blue satin for her bed's canopy, her determination
to create the world's most beautiful maritime interiors can still be sensed
on board 'Sea Cloud.'
Her white and gold private
suite and the warm, wood-paneled rooms her husband occupied still display
all the exquisite details they enjoyed, from swan-shaped golden faucets
to a hand-carved swag of mahogany leaves and ribbons draped over a marble
fireplace.
The original guest staterooms,
too, recall the days of Roosevelt and Luce, Duke and Duchess. Renovated
along with the owners' and daughter's suites in 1979, great care was taken
to preserve their original character. Today they continue to offer their
privileged occupants the same lush ambiance enjoyed by the passengers of
'Sea Cloud' in the 1930s.
New
Cabins, Old-fashioned Elegance
To allow additional passengers
to experience the excitement of a voyage aboard 'Sea Cloud,' handsome new
cabins were installed on the Captain's and Promenade decks during the ship's
full refurbishment. Renovated again in 1993, these newer accommodations
share the ship's style and respect for detail, with their own marble bathrooms,
spacious closets, wood paneling and brass trim. The cabin windows frame
an ever-changing view of the sea and, thanks to a state-of-the-art satellite
communications system, phone calls, facsimiles and E-mails can be placed
to any spot on the globe.
At the center of the ship's
charm lies this piquant contrast: inside, passengers enjoy all the comfort,
elegance and service of a glamorous super-yacht; outside, the adventure
of an ocean voyage under 34,000 yards of sail awaits. It's a distinction
her guests have been savoring for the past seventy years.
Dining
on Board
From a deckside breakfast
buffet to an elegant dinner at the Captain's table, meals on board 'Sea
Cloud' hearken to the days when juice was always freshly squeezed, oysters
were Rockefeller and cocktails poured foaming out of a silver shaker. The
ambiance at dinner has been likened to a private club, refined but relaxed,
elegant but without artificial formalities. There is no seating order other
than rotating invitations to the Captain's table, and an expanded dining
room (once Marjorie Post's salon) accommodates all passengers at a single
sitting. Menus make the most of local specialties, brought aboard by tender
and transformed into culinary art by the ship's chefs, several of whom
are members of the renowned and exclusive "Maîtres de la Table" association.
A discerning selection of fine European wines accompanies each course.
Sea air adds savor to cuisine
aboard 'Sea Cloud.' After a day of sightseeing on shore or an afternoon
of swimming, the ship rides at anchor in a quiet bay and appetites rise
to the sparkling occasion that each meal on board becomes.
When an à la carte
dinner is indicated in your pre-cruise or post-cruise arrangements, you
may choose what you like from the menu (except caviar). You may dine when
and with whom you choose at any of the restaurants at your hotel, or privately
in your room at no extra charge. You may also dine outside the hotel, at
any restaurant of your choice, on evenings when à la carte is indicated.
Wherever you dine, you may select from the restaurant's full menu (except
caviar). You simply pay for your meal and present the restaurant receipt
to your Guide for immediate reimbursement. Note that mineral water and
coffee/tea are the only drinks that are reimbursable on à la carte
dining accounts.
A
Day On Board
The sea is calm. Blue light,
reflected from the sea outside your cabin window, skitters across the ceiling
above your bed. Far overhead from the Lido Deck, you can hear, very faintly,
the music of the aerobics class. Is it time to get up? Not quite yet. But
then again, the smell of coffee is growing stronger...and isn't today the
day you reserved for windsurfing?
Another day aboard 'Sea Cloud'
has begun.
Life on board the largest
of all private four-masted barques is informal, flexible and above all,
fun. Early risers can meet on deck over ethereal pastries and hot coffee,
or shake out sleepy heads with aerobics and stretching exercises. Everyone
always seems to have a hearty appetite for the sumptuous breakfast buffet:
freshly squeezed orange juice, yogurt, eggs, grilled ham and sausages,
cheeses, fresh baguettes and tropical fruit. Your choices are numerous
- as they will be all day.
If today is a day at sea,
there's time to relax in the shade of the Lido Deck, or to sunbathe in
a deck chair or on the fantail's thick cushions. Perhaps one of the guest
lecturers will speak this morning about the Delphic Oracle or Ravenna's
famous mosaics. If the winds grow favorable, it's "all hands on deck" to
set the sails - a display of precision aerial athletics no one wants to
miss.
If there's a shore excursion
on the agenda, 'Sea Cloud' docks and lands her passengers by tender to
explore Delos or Patmos, Corsica or Catania, in the company of knowledgeable
lecturers and guides. And so day glides into evening. Back on board, the
lights on the Lido Deck blink to life as the Mediterranean sun disappears
into the sea. Dinner is served, with applause for a flaming dessert. The
pianist moves to his post. Up on deck in the southern night air, a light
sea breeze flutters the hems of the ladies' dresses and soft laughter rises
high into the rigging. One last drink, one last goodnight, before the gentle
rolling of the ship rocks everyone to sleep.
Another day aboard 'Sea Cloud'
has ended...
