ITINERARY
Day 1: USA
or Canada/ Bangkok, Thailand
Depart
on an overnight flight to vivacious, colorful Bangkok, also known as
the “City of Angels.” Thailand’s capital city is a fascinating mix of
the old and new — from its canals intersecting the banks of the Chao
Phraya River that are still used as modes of transportation and streets
lined with modern boutiques, to glittering mosaic temple rooftops that
sit below soaring skyscrapers.
Day
2: Bangkok
Upon
arrival at Bangkok’s international airport, you are met by an A&K
representative at the gate and whisked through customs and immigration.
Afterward, transfer to your hotel, nestled conveniently along the banks
of the Chao Phraya River.
Mandarin
Oriental, Bangkok
Day
3: Bangkok
Begin
your exploration of this modern Southeast Asian city by visiting the
Grand Palace, one of the most beautiful examples of the ancient Siamese
court. The sprawling, garden-dotted compound includes ornate statues of
mythological creatures and more than 100 colorful buildings — many
decorated in glittering mosaics and topped with shining golden spires.
Also on the grounds is the 18th-century Wat Phra Kaew, Thailand’s most
important shrine, where the Emerald Buddha is kept. Little is known
about this famous statue, except that it is made of green jade or
jasper and that it symbolizes the independence, strength and good
fortune of the country. The afternoon is at leisure to unwind in your
hotel, take advantage of its award-winning spa, or peruse and shop in
some of the nearby high-end galleries and boutiques. This evening, join
fellow A&K travellers at a welcome cocktail party and dinner.

Day
4: Bangkok/ Siem Reap, Cambodia
Fly
to
charming Siem Reap, where you are met at the airport and expedited
through immigration and customs. Transfer to your hotel for a few hours
at leisure before setting off in the late afternoon for an exploration
of Angkor Wat, an architectural and artistic masterpiece of the mighty
Khmer Empire. From Angkor Wat, Khmer kings ruled over a vast territory
that extended from the tip of what is now southern Vietnam north to
Yunnan in China and west to the Bay of Bengal. Your expert guide shows
you the best spots for taking photos of this massive temple complex as
rays of sun dance off the exquisite bas relief carvings on its walls
and the steep steps of its pyramids.

Day
5: Siem Reap
Travel
early this morning to Ta Prohm — entangled in the surrounding jungle
foliage and one of the most romantic temples of the Angkor complex — as
it is bathed in the golden light of sunrise. Explore the temple at
leisure amid exotic bird calls, climb over its crumbling stonework
overtaken by creeping strangler figs and take winning photographs
before other visitors arrive for the day. Afterward, discover Angkor
Thom, a heavily fortified city built in the 10th century by King
Jayavarman VII; the mysterious Bayon Temple, with its 172 large-scale
faces bearing beguiling smiles; and the Elephant and Leper King
Terraces. All are breathtaking, timeless examples of masterful Khmer
engineering and artistry. After a traditional Khmer lunch, explore two
less-visited areas: Banteay Srei, known for its intricate pink
sandstone carvings, and Banteay Samre, dedicated to the Hindu deity
Vishnu and one of the most complete temple complexes of Angkor. Today,
you also visit well construction sites or communities needing wells
with A&K-supported Sam’s Brothers Clean Water Project.
Sam's Brothers Clean Water Project: provides
local communities with access to clean, bacteria-free water.
Raffles Grand Hotel
d'Angkor B L
Day
6: Siem Reap/ Ho Chi Minh City,
Vietnam
Fly
this morning to the largest and most vibrant city in Vietnam. Formerly
known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City is a bustling hub of activity, in
sharp contrast to the traditional ambience of life in Hanoi and the far
north of the country. This morning, visit the 19th-century Thien Hau
Pagoda, the most important pagoda in Ho Chi Minh City, that serves as a
site for prayers to the Buddha as well as to the Chinese deity Thien
Hau Thanh Mau, goddess of the sea and protector of sailors. Meander the
streets of the surrounding neighborhood of Cholon, the city’s colorful
Chinatown, with its Chinese delis, ancient quarters and homes of
prestigious local businessmen. Later this evening, gather for dinner at
one of Ho Chi Minh City’s culinary hot spots.
Park Hyatt
Saigon B D
Day
7: Ho Chi Minh City
This
morning, explore the expansive Cu Chi Tunnel network, a key Vietcong
resource during the Vietnam War. These tunnels, which total hundreds of
miles in length, once housed storage rooms, makeshift hospitals and
sleeping quarters that accommodated rebel fighters for up to two weeks
at a time. Heavy bombing by U.S. forces did not halt movement through
the tunnels, making this an unusually successful defense for the
Vietcong. Later, savor the unique flavors of Vietnamese cuisine — a
legacy of the various cultures to have passed through the country —
before returning to your hotel, where the rest of the day is at leisure
to rest or explore the city.

Days
8-9: Ho Chi Minh City/ Danang/Hoi
An
This
morning, arrive in Danang and continue to your resort located on
sparkling China Beach, where you settle in during the remainder of the
morning. After lunch, visit the charming traditional town of Hoi An,
once a flourishing port and meeting place of Eastern and Western
cultures under the Nguyen lords. Set off on a sunset boat trip (weather
permitting) and get a glimpse of local life as the sun dips into waters
punctuated by fishermen’s traps. The next day is yours to enjoy the
amenities of your luxurious villa, including several swimming pools; an
elegant, serene spa; a tennis court; a state-of-the-art health club;
and a coconut treelined private beach. You may also choose to discover
Hoi An at your own pace.

Day
10: Hoi An/Danang/Hanoi
Today,
arrive in charming Hanoi in northern Vietnam, the country’s cultural
heart that still bears the traces of centuries of changing cultures and
dynasties. The city retains pockets of French colonial architecture and
wide boulevards as well as hints of Chinese influences in its temples
and gardens — though a modern café culture also flourishes,
lending a sophisticated European flare. This evening, attend a
traditional water puppetry show, or roi nuoc, for which Hanoi
is famous. The theater performance is set in a pond, where 18- to
38-inch puppets are maneuvered by rods and wires concealed under the
water to tell stories of daily life in Vietnam.
Sofitel
Legend Metropole Hanoi B L
Day
11: Hanoi
Visit
Ho Chi Minh’s house, a simple two-story wooden structure located among
banyan, frangipani, poinciana and milkweed trees and a carp-filled
pond. Continue to the lotus-shaped One Pillar Pagoda, dating back to
the first Vietnamese empire independent from China in the 11th century.
This well-known pagoda was originally constructed of a single large
tree trunk; today, it has been reconstructed in more durable cement.
Visit the Quan Thanh Temple, which houses a huge bronze bell and the
National Museum of Fine Arts, with its excellent collection of folk
art, sculpture, engravings and lacquerware by contemporary Vietnamese
artists. Later, travel the way a local would — by cyclo —
through the Old Quarter. This evening, gather with your fellow
travellers for a farewell dinner.

It’s
Simply The Best
Way To Travel
Some people
collect travel destinations the way others collect Biedermeier
furniture
or presidents’ autographs.
What’s come
onto the market this year? Bhutan? Libya? Mongolia? Why not fly over
this
summer and add it to the collection?
Others travel
for an entirely different set of reasons. Reasons which have less to do
with collecting countries (who needs another trophy on the shelf?) than
with gathering experience.
If you’re a
member of the latter group, you know that, at its best, a journey down
the Sepik River or up Mount Kilimanjaro, across Provence or along the
Antarctic
Peninsula, can change you deeply in ways both tangible and intangible,
acknowledged and unavowed.
However, when
changing the way you look at the world is one of your travel objectives
— when authentic experience matters more to you than casual acquisition
— the travel company you choose has a tall order to fill.
That’s where
Abercrombie & Kent comes in.
Since 1962,
A&K has been doing one thing exceptionally well. We specialize in
matching
unique people with unique places, and in providing the expertise and
(unobtrusive)
support that allows them to experience those places fully, at first
hand
and in their own personal style.
It’s simply
the best way to travel. And it requires a unique combination of local
knowledge
and global organization that only Abercrombie & Kent is equipped to
provide.
The travel
industry is filled with companies who own only their brochures and a
handful
of contracts with independent suppliers overseas. In contrast, A&K
has its own network of offices (48 and counting) across the globe,
staffed
full time by A&K professionals. We own and operate luxury camps and
lodges in remote destinations to ensure that our clients have access to
the best.
And we draw
on the knowledge, humor and creativity of an incredible team of staff
members
and local “friends of A&K,” to bring you face-to-face with an
Antarctic
iceberg the size of Chartres Cathedral, or make it possible for you to
walk around Chartres itself with an expert on its stained glass. To set
you down for a private picnic a deux in the middle of the African
savannah
or give you and the children your own tropical island for a day.
Experience
does count. Ours will make yours unforgettable.
A&K
-
The First Name
in Luxury Travel
For more than
forty
years, Abercrombie
& Kent (A&K) has been internationally recognized as
the first name in luxury travel. Born in 1962 as a safari company in
Nairobi,
Kenya, A&K's unparalleled travel and tour operations now extend
across
the far and exotic reaches of the globe. A&K takes its travelers on
extraordinary journeys-in extraordinary style-to more than one hundred
countries on all seven continents. The company's tours and safaris span
the globe from Africa to the Middle East, India and Nepal; from the
Orient
to Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific; and from Europe to
Central
and South America and Antarctica. Forty-five destination management
companies
ensure the "insider access" that only a local staff can provide.
A&K’s
impressive and enticingly
varied list of luxury and adventure holidays combine active days with
comfortable,
luxuriant nights. Small group escorted
journeys
allow guests to confidently travel to places they might otherwise
hesitate
to go on their own, with a choice of itineraries at varying levels of
luxury. Family
holidays are tailored to the interests, attention spans and
abilities of all ages, with comfortable hotels and comforting meals,
and,
most importantly, a friendly guide who understands children. Tailor
made private travel offers independent travellers meticulous
attention to detail, safety and customer service. These
lifestyle-oriented
programs are one reason why A&K was honored at the World Travel
Awards
as “World’s Leading Luxury Specialist Tour Operator.”
Geoffrey
Kent, who
along with Jorie
Butler Kent owns and operates A&K, was born-most fittingly-while
his
British parents were on safari in Zambia. Indeed, he spent much of his
childhood on the African continent. In 1962, Geofrey Kent, along with
his
parent's Colonel John and Valerie Kent, formed Abercrombie & Kent.
In the 1970s,
Geoffrey Kent, who
by then had long been the Managing Director of the company, entered
into
a partnership with Jorie Ford Butler of Oak Brook, Illinois, to run
A&K.
They continue to travel the world in search of adventures that will
surprise
and thrill their guests. Under their passionate and visionary
guidance-Geoffrey
Kent serves as Chairman and CEO, Jorie Butler Kent as Executive Vice
Chairman
- Abercrombie & Kent represents the uncompromising best at every
turn
in the road.
With a
philosophy
that is governed
in equal parts by the Kents' unswerving commitment to conservation and
their mission to provide "memories of a lifetime," A&K goes to
seemingly
limitless lengths to design tours that offer privileged
access and special insight.
Further distinguishing A&K is the fact that the company owns luxury
safari lodges in pristine wilderness areas, including Chief's Camp and
Chobe Chilwero in Botswana; exclusive rights to camps with some of
Africa's
finest game-viewing; a fleet of comfortable, well-maintained ground
transport
vehicles; and the Sun Boats on the Nile. A&K also creates unique
travel
experiences built around the luxury trains of Venice
Simplon-Orient-Express
and the Royal Scotsman; the Road to Mandalay river cruiser and 29 canal
and river cruisers in Europe; and the legendary Sea Cloud, the world's
most beautiful sailing ship.
Abercrombie
&
Kent's headquarters
are in Oak Brook, Illinois. Forty-seven offices worldwide, employing
more
than 1,700 travel professionals, offer unrivaled attention to detail,
safety
issues and service standards.
A deep-rooted
concern for the natural
world infuses each and every A&K trip: Geoffrey Kent and Jorie
Butler
Kent believe passionately in "high-yield, low-impact" tourism-adventure
that respects the natural environment and benefits indigenous peoples.
They are the founders of Friends of Conservation and the Abercrombie
&
Kent Global Foundation, established to address global environmental and
conservation concerns. Among its achievements have been significant
contributions
to the preservation of Kenya's famed Masai Mara Game Reserve, as well
as
to anti-poaching and environmental education projects on all seven
continents.
