Yangtze River After visiting
the site of the Yangtze’s Three Gorges Dam, sail into the shoals and rapids
of Xiling Gorge, longest of the Three Gorges and a first taste of one of
China’s scenic wonders. Disembarking at Badong for an excursion to seldom-visited
Shennong Xi, we are poled along the Shennong River by local boatmen who
communicate with their fellows in song. After cruising through the unusual
mountain landscapes of Wu (“Witches”) Gorge, and dramatic Qutang Gorge,
enter the upper course of the river, where the Yangtze begins the journey

Chongqing / Xian Dock in Chongqing,
disembarking for a city tour before transferring to the airport. On arrival
in Xian, capital of Shaanxi Province and one of China’s most historic cities,

Xian Some thirty
years ago, peasant farmers digging a well uncovered bronze weapons and
broken shards of terra cotta, which in turn led to the discovery of Emperor
Qin Shihuangdi’s tomb complex. Its army of terra cotta warriors and horses
is a spectacle indeed: archers and spearmen, charioteers and generals with
signal bells and drums, all found in battle formation. Today’s sightseeing
includes a privileged look at the fabled warriors, as well as visits to

Geoffrey Kent, who along with Jorie
